Operating a commercial fishing boat on a sunny, summer day is a far cry from managing the business in the depths of winter. Not only does vehicle operation take on a new focus, the variety of fish changes with each passing month along with one's type of clothing. In this course, you, the career-oriented commercial fisher, will learn methods to best navigate the vessel through a variety of harsh weather conditions including wind, fog, rain and snow. Federal regulations and state laws will be reviewed based on relation to time of year, and quotas will be addressed for each state and how they vary. In addition, you will learn the techniques required to locate different types of fish in colder waters, gaining an understanding of the characteristics and unique habits of the potential catch. Equipment used to address each specific type of fish will be reviewed and tested including the variety of rods, reels, lines and hooks, together with natural and artificial baits. Trolling techniques will be practiced as will correct vessel speed and overall boat operation. Engine maintenance will be covered in detail as pertaining to damage and stress caused by colder weather. From this course, you will gain significant insight and experience into running a commercial fishing business during the harshest time of year.
