This course provides students with an opportunity to enhance their amateur video techniques by learning what it takes to create simple, effective videos to support web-based magazines and web sites. Our instructor will cover the basics of video camera operation, from the correct way to hold the camera, to knowing when to use – and not use – special in-camera effects. Each student will record images of moving automobiles and learn methods to capture steady shots, zooming in and out, and shooting from angles to create the most dramatic effects. Instruction will include emphasis on ambient sound and dialogue awareness, as well as the limitations of capturing sound with an internal microphone. Lastly, students will learn principles of moving effectively while balancing the camera to avoid jarring motions or recording overly lengthy shots. Following the fieldwork, an online component will be used to emphasize the practical instruction but also cover topics including how to use internal and natural lighting, shot composition, and achieving dramatic effects. A valid driver’s license is required to take this course. Cameras will be provided.
