Skippers on fishing boats are responsible for every operational facet of the business, from sailing the boat, to hiring and supervising the crew, to coordinating marketing activities. In this course, you will learn first-hand how the captain steers the business. Working with a marine professional, you will learn to identify the various nautical instruments such as compasses, depth gauges and their use in operating the vessel. Learn to read naval charts and channel markers so as to pilot the boat. Learn about the various types of fishing gear and storage facilities and how to use fish finders to locate schools of fish. Understand compliance measurements for caught fish and methods to sort, pack, refrigerate and stow them for delivery. Finally, gain understanding of how to sell one's catch for a profit. Once this class is completed, students can move on toward study leading to a Captain's License.
