In this course, you will dive into the technology of the automobile with an eye to the engineering aspects that have created our car culture and changed the way we live. The course will cover the long-term development strategy of the automobile with additional focus on driver behavior, the accomplishments of automobile production companies, and the effect of automobile development on our society. An online component will guide you through topics including: the development of the combustion engine; the evolution of the drivetrain; the chassis; wheel suspension; the generation and distribution of breaking energy; decarbonization; and safety. In the practical portion of the course, our instructor will focus on the history of the development of the automobile from the 19th century to the present. Students will have an opportunity to operate several vehicles to gauge performance based on design and construction.
