Reality TV has brought the hardships and adventure of commercial fishing into our living rooms. Yet, for anyone considering a career in commercial fishing, basic skills are required in both handing the vessel and in preparing and transporting the catch. In this course you will learn how to locate the most bountiful fishing grounds using electronic equipment and the proper way to anchor your vessel and moor with other vessels once you get there. You will gain a basic understanding of engine maintenance and troubleshooting as well as receive a review of knots and hitches so valuable in the safe operation of the vessel and in hauling in the catch. You will learn to handle the catch and preserve it for transportation by controlling temperature, microbes and available oxygen, then learn the methods for transporting your catch to your buyer at port. Lastly, you will receive instruction in environmental issues that are affecting our waterways and the types of fish that may or may not be caught for commercial sale.
